Chennai Is Still in Crisis — Despite the Lessons of 2019
In 2019, Chennai declared Day Zero — all four city reservoirs ran dry simultaneously, leaving 11.2 million people without water for an entire day. It was India’s most alarming urban water emergency. Seven years later, in Summer 2026, Chennai continues to face a water supply deficit of 713 million litres per day. Demand has reached 2,248 MLD while supply stands at only 1,535 MLD.
